The 1v1 death match was played on a brand new first person shooter game, Painkiller. “I wanted to show my commitment to competitive gaming by competing at the CPL events this year.” said Wendel. “I practiced hard since the end of June to learn this new game to get ready for this event, but just came up a little short to a great player who was on his game. I am re-dedicating myself to win the Winter CPL in order to hold my Champion of the Year title.”

Wendel added, “For me, one of the highlights of this years CPL was the amazing U5 CoD Team – who came out of almost nowhere to win the Call of Duty team Championship. I am proud of them and happy that the Fatal1ty Brain Trust was able to help support this emerging team, who went on to play undefeated.”

The Winter CPL will take place at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Dallas, Texas from Wednesday, December 15 to Sunday December 19, 2004. The CPL Champion of the Year title is determined by total points scored in the Summer and Winter events.

The Cyberathlete® Extreme World Championships included five official game tournaments with $275,000 in cash prizes, a large Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) area, CPL’s largest exhibition area ever, large spectator arena, new stage hosted at the Intel pavilion, music concert, unofficial tournaments, workshops, and more.

Launched June 26, 1997, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) is the world’s first computer games sports league; and having hosted final tournaments on five continents and official qualifying tournaments in over 40 countries, the CPL is the global leader in professional computer game competitions.

About Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel
Johnathan first got involved in tournaments when he heard about a CPL’s Frag3 Tournament that took place in October 1999. He won third there and was invited to represent the USA in Stockholm two weeks later where he won undefeated, winning all 18 maps against the top players in the world. He continued to dominate competitions all over the world, including in Singapore, St. Louis, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Korea, Germany, Australia, Holland and Brazil, to name just a few.

At QuakeCon 2002, he faced off against his rival ZeRo4 in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the year and ended up winning the match in a 14-(-1) flawless victory. He went on to place third overall in the event and fourth at the World Cyber Games USA a few months later. To top it all off, he won CPL Pentium 4 Winter Champions event in December for Unreal Tournament 2003, a victory which netted the CPL Champion of the Year for the third year in a row – each Championship was for victories in a different game.
