QuakeCon 2013 Now Over

QuakeCon, the largest BYOC in the country was held earlier this month in Dallas, Texas. Also known as one of my favorite events! It was a pleasure to attend and I really had a blast. I hung out in the BYOC playing Quake a lot and saw some really great friends I don’t normally get the chance to see. Also checked out the pro Quake tournament going on, which was run really well by the FACEIT guys.

It was great to see all of my old friends and to hang out with them for the week. I got to see a lot of them compete in the Quake tournament, which saw Rapha win another year. I’ve gotta say, Rapha really impresses me. He’s consistently one of the top players in Quake, no matter how long the Quake scene has been around. I also met a talented Russian Quake player named Evil who placed second in the tournament. His play really impressed me as well and I hope to see more of him in the future.

Speaking of the tournament; this year QuakeCon did something a little different and had FACEIT host it with well known eSports figure, SirScoots, behind production of the stream. Instead of holding the tournament in the exhibitor hall where it’s always been in, they held it in the room outside of the convention. The entire tournament setup, from production to the tournament computers, administrators, and spectator area were all right in this area. This actually made things a whole lot better for the players, gave them a nice isolated area to focus on the tournament without having to face any sound issues coming from sponsor booths. This was probably one of the smoothest tournaments I’ve seen and I’ve gotta take my hat off to the FACEIT guys for that.

All in all, it was a great QuakeCon and it reminded me why it’s one of my favorites. Met some great people, saw some great friends, had an awesome time in the BYOC and enjoyed my time in Dallas!
